Epicurious Charity Dinner At Michael Mina Restaurant

I just wanted to take a moment to publicize an interesting and important charity event being held by Epicurious in San Francisco.   On Monday, September 18, 2006, Michael Mina Restaurant will host a four-course dinner as part of Epicurious' recently-announced Wine.Dine.Donate program.   Fifty percent of all proceeds from the evening will go directly to America's Second Harvest, the largest charity in the United States devoted to hunger relief.   The remaining fifty percent, I've been informed, will go toward compensating the restaurant at cost;   Epicurious itself keeps no portion of the proceeds.

The menu for the evening is slated to be as follows:
  • Ahi Tuna Carpaccio
    Heirloom Tomatoes, Basil Pesto

  • Tapioca Crusted Tai Snapper
Dried Fruit Basmati Rice, Chili Lime Vinaigrette

  • Duet of Beef
Roasted Fillet, Worcestershire Braised Short rib
    Horseradish Whipped Potatoes

  • Local Strawberry Shortcake
    Buttermilk Biscuit, Chantilly
A wine pairing will also be provided with each course.   The all-inclusive price (wine, tax, and gratuity included) is $200 per person.   Tickets can be purchased online.

If you are unable to participate in the restaurant event, don't despair;   the Epicurious website actually has instructions on how you can throw your own dinner party in order to raise money for this worthy cause.   The basic concept is simple:   each month, Epicurious will post a collection of recipes from a leading chef for a multi-course dinner menu, along with a list of suggested wine pairings.   For example, the August menu was contributed by Michael Mina (and it actually contains two of the four dishes that will be served in the restaurant on September 18).   All you have to do is prepare the meal and encourage your guests to consider making a contribution to the extent of their comfort level.   Finally, if you simply do not have the time or inclination to pull off a dinner party of your own, you can always contribute food, funds or time directly to America's Second Harvest itself.
